Carmarthen Quins 21 Merthyr 40

IRONMEN BONUS POINT WIN OVER THE QUINS

Carmarthen Quins 21 Merthyr 40 (Saturday 4th May at Carmarthen Park)

Following the disappointment of losing in the WRU Cup final on Sunday to title rivals Cardiff, it was important that the ironmen bounced back against Carmarthen Quins to stay on track to defend their Principality Premiership title. Despite a shaky start, the defending champions were on top in all aspects of play with the pack paving the way for victory, well led by captain Craig Locke. However, it was the home side that started the more positive side and soon took an early lead when inside center Batcup made an inside break in midfield and offloaded to his co centre Nick Reynolds to touch down, outside half Wilson converted and the Quins led 7-0. Quins were in no mood to hand the game to the Ironmen and came close to extending their lead further but good defense keeping them at bay. After weathering the early pressure, Merthyr began to string some phases together and some good driving play from the forwards began to tell as they drove at the Quins line and it was not long before they drew level when second row Ben Murphy was driven over from short range, full back Jarvis converted to tie the scores 7-7. This gave the ironmen confidence and a fine break from full-back Jarvis just over the halfway line found wing man Teri Gee in space and the wing show how dangerous he can be with the ball in hand as he sprinted clear to touch down under the posts, Jarvis converted to give Merthyr a 7-14 lead. The Merthyr forwards then began to take control as they began to find gaps in the home defense and when prop Louis Jones was held up 10 meters out, captain Locke muscled his way over for the third try, Jarvis converted, and Merthyr had stretched their lead to 7-21. The Merthyr forwards kept the pressure on the Quins pack and great pick up drives from, Murphy, Locke, Mc Bride, and Rees gained great yards for the Ironmen. Just before half time a stray kick upfield from the Quins outside half Wilson was gathered by Gee on the half way line and he sprinted unopposed to touched down under the posts, Jarvis converted to seal a bonus point just on half time as the ironmen went in 7-28. Although behind the Quins refused to throw the towel in during the second half and scored the first try when former Wales under 20s Ford made a cracking break on the half way line before offloading to Reynolds who raced over for his second try, Wilson converted to close the score 14-28. The Merthyr forwards then regained control and after several drives from line outs inside the Quins 25 Locke was held up short, but the Quins couldn’t stop the second surge and when the drive was pulled down, Referee Simon Rees awarded a penalty try to give Merthyr a 14-35 lead. Again, the Quins didn’t give in and kept throwing the ball around looking for a score and this was rewarded when the home backs showed great ball skills which found Wing man Dylan Morgan in space to race away for the Quins 3rd try, Wilson converting. Merthyr had the last say in this exciting game when inside centre Arron Pinches made a break just over the half way line, off loading to replacement scrum half Adam Hoskins who raced clear to end a pulsating and exciting game with Merthyr running out winners 21-40. Full credit to the Quins they never gave in but were no match for the forward power of the Merthyr 8. With two games remaining the ironmen need 4 points to retain the Premiership title, with a home fixture this Friday night against the dangerous North Wales side RGC 1404, before a visit to valley rivals Pontypridd.
