IRONMEN TO STRONG FOR GALLANT EBBW VALE

REIGNING CHAMPIONS MERTHYR TO STRONG FOR THE STEELMEN

EBBW VALE 0 MERTHYR 20 (FRIDAY OCTOBER 26TH 2018 EUGEEN CROSS EBBW VALE).

The Merthyr pack paved the way for this impressive away win over title rivals Ebbw Vale at Eugene Cross Park in front of live TV cameras on a wet and windy Friday Night. Merthyr who played into the wind and rain soon took an early lead when a lineout deep inside the Ebbw Vale 25 was taken by back row man Nick White and has his forwards drove him towards the try line the home captain Ronny Kynes pulled the maul down resulting in Match Referee Nigel Owen awarding a penalty try but also yellow carding the Ebbw Vale captain to give the ironmen a 0-7 lead. Merthyr had several other opportunities to extend their lead but good home defence keeping them out as the conditions became worsen and both sides were guilty of losing the ball in the tackle area. Ebbw did have a try scoring chance just before halftime when the ball was spread wide inside the Merthyr half which saw full back Dan Haymond race away but a fine defensive tackle from Jay Baker keeping him out. On the stroke of half time Merthyr should have extended their lead when after several driving phases inside the Ebbw vale 25 which saw captain Craig Locke drive clear but due to the greasy ball, the ball spilled from his hands with the line at his mercy. Leading 0-7 at half time Merthyr stretched the lead with the reliable kicker Matthew Jarvis slotting over two consecutive penalties to give the ironmen a 0-13 lead. Merthyr then began to take the game to the home side with some great drives up field from the impressive Paddy McBride, Jack Perkins, Nick White, and Man of the Match Phil Rees and only great home defence and tackling kept Ebbw from folding, but after several drives near the Steelman’s line scrum half Justin James worked the ball to the blind to find wingman Jay Baker in space to crash over for Merthyr’s 2nd try, Jarvis converting to give Merthyr a winning lead 0-20. It was now all Merthyr has they looked to dive home the lead further, with Merthyr Skipper Craig Locke leading by example twice getting close to the try line but brave home tackling denying him any score. Both sides making changes has the game reached the last 10 minutes and some great ball handling skills from Prop Ben Warren and backrow man Hemi Barnes nearly breaking the home defence. The Merthyr pack were outstanding all night well led by skipper Locke, and an outstanding back row of White, Perkins and Rees. They carried and tackled hard all night and Rees showed off some great handling skills in the wet and slippery conditions. Mention must also go to the Merthyr half backs Justin James and Gareth Davies who controlled and dictated play behind the winning pack of forwards. Merthyr now take a week off due to internationals are next in action against local rivals Pontypridd on Friday 9th November kick off 7:15pm were a large crowd is expected at the wern complex.
