Bargoed 17 Merthyr 38

SIX TRY BONUS POINT WIN FOR THE IRONMEN

BARGOED 17 MERTHYR 38. (Saturday 29th December 2018)

Battling Bargoed made the current Premiership champions fight for their six-try bonus point win at Bargoed Park. Bargoed who have struggled for most of the season and are fighting for survival in the Premiership got off to the worst possible start as from the kick-off, outside half Prosser failed to send the ball the required 10 meters and found themselves being shunted back from the set piece with referee Tom Spurrier awarding a penalty, from the kick to touch the ironmen drove the lineout over the line with tighthead prop Louis Jones claiming the try. Merthyr soon doubled their lead when the Merthyr forwards drove deep into the Bargoed 25 with good ball handling from Phil Rees, Paddy Mc Bride and Jake Thomas to set up back row man Jack Perkins to cross for the first of his two tries, full back Matthew Jarvis converted to give Merthyr a 0-12 lead. Merthyr then seemed to sit back on the lead and allowed Bargoed to gain in confidence has they started to put several phases together, and this was rewarded when Prosser slotted over a penalty from 35 meters to close the gap 3-12. This was shorted lived as from the kick off the ironmen drove deep into the Bargoed 25 and after several drives second row Paddy McBride crossed for his first try for his club, to extend the lead 3-17. This seemed to wake the home side up and some good work from backrow men Adam Powell, and Ben Fry set up wingman Ashley Norton to cross over just before half time, Prosser converted, but the Ironmen went in at half time with a 10-17 lead. Merthyr got their bonus point shortly after the restart when a driving maul deep inside the Bargoed line saw the Merthyr pack drive them over the line with hooker Rhys Williams claiming the try, Jarvis converted, and the ironmen had pulled away 10-24. Another driving lineout deep inside the Bargoed half saw the Merthyr pack once again drive Bargoed backward with back Rowman Jack Perkins claiming his second try, Jarvis converted, and the ironmen had stretched the lead further 10-31. Credit to Bargoed although behind never gave up and this was rewarded when a scrum deep inside the Merthyr half saw the home pack drive Merthyr backward and number 8 Powell touching down, Prosser converted to close the gap 17-31. It was Merthyr who had the final say with the best move of the game when both forwards and backs linked together deep inside the Bargoed 25 and a swift handling move saw replacement wing Adam Hoskins being worked over in the corner, Jarvis converted, and Merthyr had run out worthy winners 17-38. Credit to Bargoed who had times pressured the Merthyr side with their big pack, but the champions just had that little edge to keep them top of the league. For Merthyr it was the forwards once again that pathed the way for the victory well led by Captain Locke, and well supported by fellow second row McBride who seems to be improving every game. Merthyr now turn their attention to defend their WRU Cup as they travel to Aberavon on Friday night for a first round cup tie live on TV, kick off 7:30pm.
