Ironmen bonus point win in North Wales

CONVINCING WIN FOR THE IRONMEN IN NORTH WALES

RGC 1404 10 MERTHYR 34 (Eirias Park Colwyn Bay Friday 28th September 18).

Principality premiership champions Merthyr responded in fine style to last weeks home defeat against Aberavon by running in five tries in a convincing 34-10 victory over RGC 1404 in Colwyn Bay on Friday night, a game shown live on TV. Merthyr welcomed back prop James Howe, back row man Osian Davies, and influential captain Craig Locke to the pack which gave them the edge over their North Wales opponents. Full back Matthew Jarvis gave Merthyr and early lead with a well struck penalty after RGC failed to release at the break down. RGC began to put several good phases together as they moved the ball away wide and this was rewarded when a sweeping move deep inside the Merthyr 25 found wing man Sam Jones who managed to squeeze over in the corner after a check from the match tmo, he was awarded the try. Merthyr were struggling at the lineout to get clean possession but hit back when a fine inside pass from outside half Gareth Davies found centre Josh Martin in space who raced away under the posts for the first of the ironmen’s five tries, Jarvis converted, and Merthyr had taken the lead back 5-10. Both sides were guilty of silly errors as the game swung back and fore with both sides cancelling each other out as the first half ended. A half time pep talk from head coach Dale Mcintosh seemed to have worked as Merthyr took the game to the North Wales side early in the second half and were soon on the score board. A penalty 40 meters out was kicked deep into to touch by Jarvis, inside the RGC 25 and from the lineout the Merthyr pack drove RGC back 25 meters over their line with scrum half Justin James touching down. This seemed to give the ironmen renewed confidence as from the kick off Merthyr drove back down field and a fine drive  from prop James Howe who was stopped just short of the line was quickly recycled and captain Craig Locke powered his way over for the try, Jarvis converted to give the ironmen a 5-22 lead. Merthyr were now dominant especially at the set piece as they kept the pressure on the North Wales 8 driving them off their own ball. Merthyr then made the game safe with their 4th and bonus point try again it was the forwards that drove RGC backwards inside their 25 with the referee playing advantage as RGC collapsed the maul, scrum half James finding replacement outside half Richard Powell in space and a neat chip ahead was regather by Powell to score a fine individual try, Jarvis converted and the ironmen had stretched the lead 5-29. It was now all Merthyr as RGC failed to cope the relented pressure from the Merthyr pack and in back row man Osian Davies and captain Locke they had two match winners. With 10 minutes remaining Merthyr made several changes but kept the forward pressure on RGC and a Charge from Prop Sam Hobbs which was stopped 10 meters from the RGC line was carried on by fellow prop Louis Jones who crashed over for the 5th try. Credit to RGC they still tried to play, and this was rewarded deep into injury time when Aaron Bagshaw touch down wide out, but it was all to late as the referee blew for full time and Merthyr had ran out deservingly winners 34-10. This was a powerful forward performance from the ironmen who were well led by captain Craig Locke who must have been please by his sides forward dominance especially at the set piece. Behind the scrum half backs James and Davies controlled the game, with Josh Martin and Adam Thomas tackling and defending, denying RGC any good ball. Merthyr are once again live on tv, this Friday night when they Face Bridgend Ravens at home 7:15pm.
