Many of you will have read of recent toing and froing regarding the merits or otherwise of joining the new Elite Domestic Competition (EDC) for the 2024/25 season.
To avoid confusion and rumour, we thought helpful to update on our decision not to submit an expression of interest ahead of the October 27th deadline. Whilst representation regarding a number of areas of concern were made collectively alongside colleagues from Cardiff RFC and Pontypridd RFC, for the purpose of this update, we have focused solely on our club, our decision and our future.
Having considered at length the information supplied by the Welsh Rugby Union, our Patron, Sir Stanley and Club Committee determined the proposal would significantly reduce the number of competitive home games, and in turn, limit the potential for vital matchday and commercial revenue. In addition to a reduction in the number of meaningful home fixtures, the proposed significant gap in competitive action through the winter months, was considered financially unviable, as well as disengaging for players and spectators alike.
Whilst wholeheartedly supportive of the overarching intent to enhance player development in Wales, we concluded the proposed model would not work for the #Ironmen both on and off the field.
To be clear, this is not a marker of a lack of ambition. To the contrary, we remain a tremendously ambitious club, with aspiration to be very competitive, in what will be the newly formed ‘Premiership’ for 2024/25. We look forward to renewing old acquaintances. Good competition, shared in great company!
With a thriving age-group section, an environment doing so much good for the young people of our town, we intend to set our sights on our next chapter. One which offers a strong and coherent pathway into Senior Squad, with our most talented, always encouraged to grow beyond our new ceiling.
Our ambition must always be to provide a community facility which brings people together through the medium of sporting competition and friendship. An engaging, safe and supportive environment which nurtures talent, builds confidence and improves life skills through positive experience, with memories and friendships to last a lifetime.
The future of Merthyr RFC is both very exciting and very much safe in our collective hands. #BePartOfIt #TeamIronmen
